TSSAA finalizes 2027-29 football classifications with several programs shifting divisions
The Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association released its finalized football classifications for the 2027-29 cycle on Oct. 5, with a number of programs moving up or down in classification across both Division I and Division II. On the Division I side, six programs moved up, including Campbell County and Karns into 6A, while Pearl-Cohn dropped from 4A to 2A and East Nashville fell to 1A. Several Division I programs, including La Vergne and Hunters Lane, will play non-region schedules for the upcoming cycle. In Division II, Nashville Christian and Middle Tennessee Christian moved up to AA, while Davidson Academy dropped to A, and a large group of programs — including Father Ryan, Christian Brothers, and Chattanooga Christian — will play non-region schedules.
The TSSAA released its finalized classifications for the 2027-29 cycle on Oct. 5 and a handful of football programs have made some moves.
Why it matters
For coaches: Coaches at affected programs will need to plan rosters, recruiting, and scheduling around new classification levels or non-region status beginning in 2027.
For athletes: High school players at reclassified schools may face different competition levels, affecting postseason paths and college exposure.
