Texas Tech paid Skydance nearly $1 million to film football docuseries, reversing industry norm
Texas Tech University agreed to pay production studio Skydance Sports $999,999 to film The Program, a four-part docuseries that premiered on Paramount+ in September, according to a February term sheet obtained by Sportico. The arrangement inverts the typical model for college sports documentaries, in which production companies pay schools for filming access — not the other way around. The fee was structured in three installments and kept just below $1 million, which according to Sportico allowed the deal to avoid triggering a Texas law threshold that would have required additional oversight including Board of Regents approval. Despite funding the production, Texas Tech received no revenue share and surrendered sole ownership of all content to Skydance Sports, retaining only limited review rights over cuts and protections against defamatory portrayals of the university.
In a reversal of the typical financial arrangement for college sports documentaries, Texas Tech University agreed to compensate Skydance's sports-focused production studio $999,999 to film The Program
Why it matters
For brands: Sponsors and apparel partners like Adidas are referenced in the distribution, signaling that brand involvement in college docuseries deals may carry unspecified obligations.
For coaches: Coaches and GM meetings were included in the filming access granted to producers, raising questions about program privacy.
For media: The deal sets a potentially precedent-shifting financial structure where universities pay for documentary coverage rather than monetizing access, which could influence future college sports media rights negotiations.
For athletes: Players and staff granted all-access to cameras — including during NIL negotiations and coaches meetings — with minimal control over how they are portrayed.
For collectives: NIL negotiations were explicitly included in the filming access granted, meaning deal-making processes between collectives and players may have been captured on camera.
