Steelers trade Joey Porter Jr. to Cowboys for two draft picks amid contract holdout
The Pittsburgh Steelers agreed to trade cornerback Joey Porter Jr. to the Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 30, according to reporter Tom Pelissero. Porter, 26, had not played this season due to a contract holdout after reportedly declining an offer that would have paid him slightly more than $27 million in 2026. Dallas, which had allowed seven passing touchdowns in its first three games, is also expected to be without starting cornerback Cobie Durant in Week 4 due to a hamstring injury. In return, the Steelers will receive a 2027 sixth-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick from Dallas.
Why it matters
For coaches: Both coaching staffs must adjust their cornerback depth charts heading into Week 4.
For athletes: Porter's contract holdout ended in a trade rather than a new deal, illustrating the risks and outcomes athletes face when declining team offers.
