Seahawks buyer Vinod Khosla donated to a Republican congressman while negotiating record $9.6B purchase
Vinod Khosla, who finalized his record $9.6 billion purchase of the Seattle Seahawks in August, made a $5,000 donation to Rep. Chuck Fleischmann (R-Tenn.) in early June while the deal was being negotiated, according to Federal Election Commission records cited by Sportico. The contribution was his first that cycle to a Republican candidate or conservative-leaning committee, coming against a backdrop of roughly $2.1 million donated to Democrats or liberal PACs during the same period. Fleischmann chairs the House Appropriations subcommittee on Energy, Water Development and Related Agencies and also sits on a House science committee's energy panel — roles that overlap with the climate tech, AI, and energy holdings in Khosla's venture capital portfolio. A representative for Khosla Ventures did not respond to a request for comment on the donation, according to the report.
Data available in July revealed he'd given four times more money to Democratic political organizations than all 31 NFL control owners combined during this cycle, and not a single donation to Republicans.
Why it matters
For brands: Companies or sponsors aligned with the Seahawks may want to understand the political profile of the new ownership group.
For media: The donation pattern adds context to how the NFL's newest and most politically distinct owner is navigating relationships within a largely conservative ownership group.
