Oregon men's basketball coach Dana Altman retires days before start of new season
Dana Altman has stepped down as Oregon's men's basketball head coach, with the announcement coming just before the start of the 2026-27 season, according to a report confirmed by the school. In a statement, Altman described the decision as one of only two truly difficult choices in his coaching career, calling it the right move at this time despite how much he values the role. Over 16 seasons leading the Ducks, Altman posted a 382-182 record, guided the program to nine NCAA Tournament appearances, and reached the Final Four in 2016-17. Oregon plans to have longtime assistant Tony Stubblefield lead the team on an interim basis for the full upcoming season while a national coaching search gets underway.
I love coaching, it's what I know best and what I've been fortunate enough to do for almost five decades.
Why it matters
For coaches: Tony Stubblefield takes on a high-profile interim role, and a national search will open opportunities for coaching candidates across the country.
For athletes: Current Oregon players must now adjust to a new interim coach mid-program, with further uncertainty ahead once a permanent replacement is named.
