NIRSA launches first national collegiate club women's flag football league with NFL backing

The National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association is set to launch a national collegiate club women's flag football league in January, supported by a multiyear NFL grant. The league will include 86 teams from across NCAA Division I, II, and III competing in a 7-on-7 format across 10 conferences, with each team playing roughly 15 games between January and April and a national championship in April. The league is designed to relieve student organizers of administrative tasks like scheduling, officiating, and facilities — burdens that have largely fallen on the players themselves at schools where varsity programs do not yet exist. According to NIRSA's national flag manager, the league is also intended to help establish a statistical foundation ahead of anticipated full NCAA sponsorship, a professional league launch in 2027, and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Why it matters

For brands: NFL clubs and sponsors already investing in women's flag have a new national platform with more than 400,000 combined social media followers to amplify their involvement.

For coaches: Club coaches and staff, many drawn from nearby high schools, will gain access to organized scheduling and officiating infrastructure rather than piecing together seasons independently.

For media: NIRSA is building a dedicated streaming platform for the league, creating a new distribution channel for collegiate flag football content.

For athletes: College women with flag football experience now have a structured, low-administrative-burden league to compete in while varsity programs remain limited at major schools.

For collectives: With varsity NCAA women's flag still years away at major programs, collectives and boosters have an early window to support club-level programs that are already drawing significant student interest.
