NFL suspends two officials in same week for the first time in eight years
The NFL handed down suspensions to two officials on Monday, the first time the league has disciplined an official since 2018. Line judge Jeff Seeman, a 20-year officiating veteran, received a two-game suspension after appearing to direct profanity at Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride during a game at MetLife Stadium. Referee Adrian Hill was suspended for one game after reportedly yelling at Minnesota Vikings linebacker Eric Wilson following an accidental collision at U.S. Bank Stadium. The NFL Players Association president responded to the incidents by stating that players are consistently held accountable in similar situations and that officials should be held to the same standard.
The last time an official was suspended was eight years ago.
Why it matters
For coaches: Coaches navigating tense sideline situations with officials should note that scrutiny on officiating conduct is at a heightened level this season.
For athletes: Players now have documented precedent that officials can face meaningful discipline for unprofessional conduct directed at them.
