Jackson County unveils mixed-use redevelopment plan for Truman Sports Complex
As the Chiefs and Royals each pursue new stadium projects, Jackson County officials have released a vision for repurposing Kansas City's Truman Sports Complex once both teams depart. Under the plan, Arrowhead Stadium would be kept and renovated to host concerts, college football, soccer, and rugby, while Kauffman Stadium would be torn down to make way for hospitality, retail, dining, and live entertainment uses on that footprint. The broader redevelopment could also incorporate housing, a transit hub, green spaces, and—in a secondary scenario—a Formula 1 circuit. County officials acknowledged that the plan remains preliminary and would depend heavily on private investment, with the county intending to contribute its land and infrastructure rather than rely on taxpayers to shoulder the full cost.
Arrowhead has history, identity, and value," said Jackson County executive Phil LeVota.
Why it matters
For brands: Businesses and developers eyeing the Kansas City market may find sponsorship and investment opportunities in the planned entertainment and hospitality district on the Kauffman site.
For media: Broadcasters and outlets covering NFL, college football, or soccer would need to track whether Arrowhead secures future event contracts under the new county management structure.
For athletes: Professional athletes playing events at a renovated Arrowhead could continue using a familiar venue even after their teams relocate.
