Duke's Manny Diaz calls for transfer fees paid to schools that develop departing players
Duke head coach Manny Diaz said in a Wednesday interview with On3 that programs which recruit and develop players deserve financial compensation when those players leave via the transfer portal. Diaz compared the idea to European soccer's transfer fee system, in which a club must pay to acquire a player under contract, with the fee going to the club rather than the athlete. His comments came after Duke lost 17 players through the portal this offseason, including quarterback Darian Mensah and wide receiver Cooper Barkate, both of whom transferred to Miami. Other coaches, including Dabo Swinney and Kirby Smart, have similarly expressed frustration with the current transfer portal framework, according to the report.
Why it matters
For coaches: Coaches who invest resources in player development may gain compensation protections, but the feasibility depends on NCAA rulemaking.
For athletes: College football players considering the portal could face new financial or procedural barriers if a transfer fee system were ever adopted.
For collectives: Any structural change to transfer rules could affect roster-building strategies and the value placed on player development pipelines.
